What if Machines Could be Creative?

چکیده
Computational creativity is the field of research that is concerned with making computers creative. In this paper, we focus on a particular subfield of this domain, combinatorial creativity. This subfield is concerned with combining components of existing concepts into new concepts. For example, we can combine the concept of a watch with the capabilities of a smartphone – and obtain a smartwatch. Or we could combine a bus service with the characteristics of a taxi and obtain a bus service on-demand. Combinatorial creativity serves different purposes: it can be used to develop new business ideas, to find plots for books or movies, to understand human creativity, to disrupt conventional assumptions, and to find design alternatives. In the long run, the dream is that computational creativity could help humans come up with new inventions. With this demo, we take a first step in this direction. We propose a system for computer-assisted brainstorming, i.e., for generating hypotheses to aid human creativity. More precisely, given an input concept (such as “car”), our system proposes variations on it (such as “What if a car did not have wheels?”, or “What if a car could park automatically?”). This paper explores different ways of generating such proposals.

Task-Based Creative Writing through Visual Advertisement: A Change of Attitude
Almost little is known about creative writing. In this research, creative writing has been introduced as an alternative to academic writing. The aims were to introduce creative writing as an alternative to academic writing to boost the participants’ attitude towards writing in general. The participants were 32 senior university students studying English Translation at Islamic Azad University, T...
متن کاملOntological Uncertainty and Design: Requirements for Creative Machines
This paper proposes that a particular type of uncertainty, ontological uncertainty, is what distinguishes creative design from other activities that might be considered design, and that much of the work in design methods and design computation is misplaced in the latter due to widely held notions of what computation is. To illustrate the process of design, an example is given of a real instance...
متن کاملCreativity as a Web Service: A Vision of Human and Computer Creativity in the Web Era
The marketplace for definitions and theories of creativity is crowded indeed. No hard consensus exists on the elements of an all-embracing theory, or on what specific sub-processes and representations are required to support creativity, either in humans or in machines. Yet commonalities do exist across theories: a search for novelty and utility is implied by most theories, as is the notion that...
متن کاملWhat If: Robots Create Novel Goals? Ethics Based on Social Value Systems
Future personal robots might possess the capability to autonomously generate novel goals that exceed their initial programming as well as their past experience. We discuss the ethical challenges involved in such a scenario, ranging from the construction of ethics into such machines to the standard of ethics we could actually demand from such machines. We argue that we might have to accept those...
متن کاملFacing the Future: Evolutionary Possibilities forHuman-Machine Creativity
This chapter examines the possibilities and challenges that lie ahead for evolutionary music and art. Evolutionary computing methods have enabled new modes of creative expression in the art made by humans. One day, it may be possible for computers to make art autonomously. The idea of machines making art leads to the question: what do we mean by 'making art' and how do we recognise and acknowle...
